General Interest Topics and University-based talks or debates

As the Exeter Branch seeks to link the community, schools and the academy, there will be a mix of events and talks and even supported projects.

From time to time the local university will open its doors to the general public or host events for schools. The Exeter Branch has co-hosted annual debates with the University of Exeter, and sometimes academics from other departments like Politics or Classics have been involved. The Historical Association’s own annual debate for school students studying at A-level has been hosted by the University, as have talks associated with Holocaust Memorial Day. Post-doctoral students have in some cases been asked to share the fruits of their doctoral research.  The Branch talks by Dr Stuart Mole and Dr Ghee Bowman are examples of this.

A talk on General Sir Redvers Buller was given to the Branch by Robert Guyver in February 2021, but it was not recorded. A slightly different version of the talk was given to Exeter’s Civic Society on Saturday 17 April. This one was recorded: this is it, warts and all – with everything from start to finish: the introductory session, the shared screen, and then questions with comments. Thank you to the Civic Society for agreeing that the Exeter Branch of the HA might share this talk. For feedback or more information about the Exeter Branch of the Historical Association, please contact Robert Guyver on guyverrobert@gmail.com

Each aspect of Buller’s life is worthy of more research, including local history research. This is work in progress.
